More attention needs to be paid to the format of the papers. Significant points (up to 15 - 20 points) on the paper/presentation grade are being lost because of this. You can check the corrections with my editing of the pdf version of each paper. These editoral corrections reflect a signficant part of the grading process.

Exam 1 is now posted and available for download. It is available only in MS Word .doc format, since the Turabian style guidelines are a part of the exam. The exam is self-contained in the downloadable document file with all the necessary instructions. That means, you should download the file; rename it following the guidelines inside the exam; answer the questions inside the file; and return the file electronically by the due date of Feb. 13. Links to the file are found both here  and in the Schedule page.
You will want to begin working on the exam as we cover the separate topics in Unit 1.0. The questions are set up in the topic sequence. Then you will have some time at the end of the class discussion to finalize your exam answers before turning it in by the due date.

How to Get Started on Your Paper:
    1. Make sure you have received the confirmation email on an assignment topic.
    2. Carefully read the Paper instructions in the Syllabus.
    3. From the assignment topic number go to the Topics section and click on the Lecture Notes hyperlink. Not all of them are posted as of today; only through topic 2.1.4.
    5. Locate the relevant chapter in the Bray textbook and read it, noting where the paper guidelines intersect material in Bray.
    6. Use the bibliography provided in the Bray chapter as a starting point for expanding study.

    Welcome
    to the
    Religion 492
    Bulletin Board
    Some Items of Note:
    1. The development of the Religion 492 course room is now underway during the holidays. The various aspects of its development will continue periodically so that everything will be in final form by the beginning of the spring semester.

    2. This means that the course design is also in process and is not yet finalized. With multiple sections already scheduled a flexible structure is being developed to accommodate classes with different numbers of students enrolled.

    3. Check the course room occasionally for insight into how the structure is being developed.

    4. For 5 points credit to your Class Participation Grade correctly fill out the online Student Profile form by January 11. The form won't be accepted after this date

My philosophy of teaching the upper level undergraduate courses stresses the importance of each student developing skills in handling the text of the Bible, not just learning the data inside the scripture. Thus the course design will highlight skill development as an essential part of the class.

This particular class focuses attention on the history of NT interpretation. Thus we will do an indepth analysis of the ways the New Testament has been understood over the centuries, beginning with the Church Fathers and continuing up to the post-modern trends at the beginning of the twenty-first century. But the study will concentrate not just on history but also on application to the text of the New Testament. The objective will be for each student to then formulate his/her own interpretative methodology in light of this study.
