NRSV
4:1 Finally, brothers and sisters [Gk brothers], we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more. 4:2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; 4:4 that each one of you know how to control your own body [Or how to take a wife for himself] in holiness and honor, 4:5 not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 4:6 that no one wrong or exploit a brother or sister [Gk brother] in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we have already told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 4:7 For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. 4:8 Therefore whoever rejects this rejects not human authority but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.
4:9 Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters [Gk brothers], you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; 4:10 and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters [Gk brothers] throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved [Gk brothers], to do so more and more, 4:11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you, 4:12 so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.

1. Determine the genre of the passage.

  1. How does the term paraenesis relate to this passage? Particularly to the phrase "how you ought to live and to please God"?
  2. How does 4:3-8 relate to other NT passages dealing with issues of sexual purity?
  3. What clues does the phrase "Now concerning..." provide about the form of 4:9-12?
2. Determine the literary context of the passage.
  1. How does this passage fit into the Body of the letter?
3. Determine the time/place references in the passage.
  1. In relation to 4:3-8, what was the cultural background of the Greco-Roman world about sexual activity for males? For females?
  2. What consitutued the proper basis of social relations in the Greco-roman world in connection to the admonitions of 4:9-12?
4. Analyze the internal literary structure of the passage.
  1. Does this passage logically fall into two (vv. 1-8 & 9-12) divisions or three (vv. 1-2, 3-8, & 9-12)?
  2. Respond to Paul's use of threats in 4:6-8.
5. Determine the interpretative issues -- both theologically and exegetically -- present in the passage.
  1. How does the imposition of "rules" for Christian living here relate to the principle of Christian freedom from legalism?
  2. How does sanctification relate to sexual purity (4:3)?
  3. What are the possible translations (& meanings) of 4:4?
  4. How does the social emphasis of 4:11-12 relate to the NT emphasis on social activism elsewhere such as the salt and light emphasis of Mt. 5:13-16?
  5. Does 4:11-12 provide a legitimate basis for the traditional American Protestant work ethic?
6. Determine a central theme of the passage

7. Develop an exegetical outline of the passage.

8.  Develop a short, one page sermon brief from the passage.
