| 9 I, John, your brother
and fellow partaker in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance5
which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos, because of the word
of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in6
the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the
sound of a trumpet, 11 saying, "Write in a book7
what you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna
and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to
Laodicea."
12 And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; 13 and in the middle of the lampstands one like a8 son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His breast with a golden girdle. 14 And His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire; 15 and His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been caused to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. 16 And in His right hand He held seven stars; and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining9 in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as a dead man. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living One; and I was10 dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. 19 "Write therefore the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall take place after these things. 20 "As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. 9 I John, your brother, who share with you
in Jesus the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was
on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony
of Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind
me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, "Write what you see in a book
and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Per'gamum
and to Thyati'ra and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to La-odice'a."
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden girdle round his breast; 14 his head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters; 16 in his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth issued a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand upon me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one; I died, and behold I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Now write what you see, what is and what is to take place hereafter. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. |
9 I am John, your brother.
In Jesus we are partners in suffering and in the Kingdom and in patient
endurance. I was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the word
of God and speaking about Jesus. 10 It was the Lord's Day, and I was worshiping
in the Spirit.3 Suddenly, I heard
a loud voice behind me, a voice that sounded like a trumpet blast. 11 It
said, "Write down what you see, and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus,
Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."
12 When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. 13 And standing in the middle of the lampstands was the Son of Man.4 He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. 14 His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were bright like flames of fire. 15 His feet were as bright as bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves 16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was as bright as the sun in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, "Don't be afraid! I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the living one who died. Look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.5 19 Write down what you have seen – both the things that are now happening and the things that will happen later. 20 This is the meaning of the seven stars you saw in my right hand and the seven gold lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of6 the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. 9 I am John, your brother,
and as a follower of Jesus I am your partner in patiently enduring the
suffering that comes to those who belong to his Kingdom. I was put on the
island of Patmos because I had proclaimed God's word and the truth that
Jesus revealed. 10 On the Lord's day the Spirit took control of me, and
I heard a loud voice, that sounded like a trumpet, speaking behind me.
11 It said, "Write down what you see, and send the book to the churches
in these seven cities: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia,
and Laodicea."
12 I turned around to see who was talking to me, and I saw seven gold lampstands, 13 and among them there was what looked like a human being, wearing a robe that reached to his feet, and a gold band around his chest.6 14 His hair was white as wool, or as snow, and his eyes blazed like fire;7 15 his feet shone like brass that has been refined and polished, and his voice sounded like a roaring waterfall.8 16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came out of his mouth. His face was as bright as the midday sun. 17 When I saw him, I fell down at his feet like a dead man. He placed his right hand on me and said, "Don't be afraid! I am the first and the last.9 18 I am the living one! I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I have authority over death and the world of the dead. 19 Write, then, the things you see, both the things that are now and the things that will happen afterward. 20 Here is the secret meaning of the seven stars that you see in my right hand, and of the seven gold lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
