36 Now one of the Pharisees
was requesting Him to dine175 with
him. And He entered the Pharisee's house, and reclined at the table. 37
And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a sinner;176
and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in
the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 7:38 and
standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with
her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing
His feet, and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee
who had invited Him saw this, he said to177
himself, "If this man were a178
prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is
touching Him, that she is a sinner."179
40 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say
to you." And he replied,180 "Say
it, Teacher." 41 "A certain moneylender had two debtors: one owed
five hundred denarii,181 and the
other fifty. 42 "When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave
them both. Which of them therefore will love him more?" 43 Simon answered
and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him,
"You have judged correctly." 44 And turning toward the woman, He said to
Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water
for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears, and wiped them with
her hair. 45 "You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has182
not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 "You did not anoint My head with oil, but
she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 "For this reason I say to you, her
sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who
is forgiven little, loves little." 48 And He said to her, "Your sins
have been forgiven." 49 And those who were reclining at the table with
Him began to say to183 themselves,
"Who is this man who even forgives sins?" 50 And He said to the woman,
"Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." 40 And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" 41 "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." 48 And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" 50 And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." | 36 One of the Pharisees
asked Jesus to come to his home for a meal, so Jesus accepted the invitation
and sat down to eat. 37 A certain immoral woman heard he was there and
brought a beautiful jar36 filled
with expensive perfume. 38 Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping.
Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then
she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee
who was the host saw what was happening and who the woman was, he said
to himself, "This proves that Jesus is no prophet. If God had really sent
him, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She's a sinner!"
40 Then Jesus spoke up and answered his thoughts. "Simon," he said to the
Pharisee, "I have something to say to you.""All right, Teacher," Simon
replied, "go ahead." 41 Then Jesus told him this story: "A man loaned money
to two people – five hundred pieces of silver37
to one and fifty pieces to the other. 42 But neither of them could repay
him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you
suppose loved him more after that?" 43 Simon answered, "I suppose the one
for whom he canceled the larger debt." "That's right," Jesus said. 44 Then
he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Look at this woman kneeling
here. When I entered your home, you didn't offer me water to wash the dust
from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with
her hair. 45 You didn't give me a kiss of greeting, but she has kissed
my feet again and again from the time I first came in. 46 You neglected
the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet
with rare perfume. 47 I tell you, her sins – and they are many – have been
forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little
shows only little love." 48 Then Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are
forgiven." 49 The men at the table said among themselves, "Who does this
man think he is, going around forgiving sins?" 50 And Jesus said to the
woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

36 A Pharisee invited Jesus
to have dinner with him, and Jesus went to his house and sat down to eat.
37 In that town was a woman who lived a sinful life. She heard that Jesus
was eating in the Pharisee's house, so she brought an alabaster jar full
of perfume60 38 and stood behind
Jesus, by his feet, crying and wetting his feet with her tears. Then she
dried his feet with her hair, kissed them, and poured the perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee saw this, he said to himself, "If this man really
were a prophet, he would know who this woman is who is touching him; he
would know what kind of sinful life she lives!" 40 Jesus spoke up
and said to him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Yes, Teacher,"
he said, "tell me." 41 "There were two men who owed money to a moneylender,"
Jesus began. "One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed
him fifty. 42 Neither of them could pay him back, so he canceled the debts
of both. Which one, then, will love him more?" 43 "I suppose," answered
Simon, "that it would be the one who was forgiven more." "You are right,"
said Jesus. 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see
this woman? I came into your home, and you gave me no water for my feet,
but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.
45 You did not welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing
my feet since I came. 46 You provided no olive oil for my head, but she
has covered my feet with perfume. 47 I tell you, then, the great love she
has shown proves that her many sins have been forgiven. But whoever has
been forgiven little shows only a little love." 48 Then Jesus said to the
woman, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 The others sitting at the table began
to say to themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" 50 But Jesus
said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
