Subject: | r311Nq10CranfordL.doc |
- Quiz 8
- Now activated
- Due next Tuesday, Nov. 11
- The quiz may be turned in by one of three methods:
- As an email attachment sent to GWU@cranfordville.com.
- Deadline is midnight on due date.
- NOTE the following:
- For Religion 311N DAY class
Subject: r311Nq0#YourName.### - Explanation of above:
- For incorrectly filled out email subject fields, an automatic 5 points will be deducted from the grade.
- My system that processes incoming emails is set to automatically file the emails in the proper folder and is based on reading the above information in the subject field. If the field isn't correctly filled out, the email tends to get lost. It can take a long time to find these, which is wasted time caused by students not following instructions.
- The correct section number (A for GOAL; N for day) must be included after the course number
- The correct quiz number, with a zero in front of quizzes 1 through 9, must be indicated.
- Your name means in small letters your last name followed by the initial of your first name, e.g., cranfordl (for Lorin Cranford)
- The appropriate file domain letters. For MS Word it is .doc; for MS Works it is .wps; for web format it is .html; for Word Perfect it is .wpd.
- Example:
Subject: r311Nq08CranfordL.doc - Via fax sent to 704-434-0472. Deadline is midnight on due date.
- As hard copy printout at the beginning of class. Deadline is classtime on due date.
- Topic Range covered: 3.4.1 - 3.4.4
- Direct Link to quiz:
- HTML formatted quiz
- MS .doc formatted quiz
- If you use Microsoft Word to answer your quizzes, then you should download the MS .doc formatted file. Although created using Word 2000 the file should be compatible with versions of MS Word from Word 2003 back to Word 98.
- If you have an earlier version of MS Word or use MS Works, then use the above HTML formatted file.
- All other word processing software should use the HTML formatted file.
- Note on answering questions:
- In Regard to Question 2: When a large number of passages are contained in the specified topic range for a quiz (at least a dozen or more), then I don't expect over a couple of sentences in summation of each passage. However, when the number of passages is small (less than a dozen), then I expect more detail in the summation of each passage.
- Presentations
- Thursday, Nov. 13
- Presenters scheduled:
- Chris Newcomb on topic 3.5.7.3
- Note to presentors:
- If you want to use a Power Point Presentation with my ThinkPad laptop, be sure to send me -- via email attachment -- an electronic copy of it by next Wednesday, Nov. 12.
- Make sure that the Presentation Guidelines are carefully followed in preparing your presentation.

All tests and homework assignments are brought back to class only once after they are graded and recorded. Subsequently they are placed in the Return Box that is located on the right front side of my desk in the GWU office in LND 232. You can pick them up anytime the office door is open. |

Department of Religious
Studies majors are required to take the 16PF Personality Inventory before
graduating. This is a tool that will help you understand your personal
strengths and weaknesses. You will appreciate having this type of
assessment of yourself as you go into your ministry. This will be
an important tool as you gain experience and mature in your ministry and
personal life.
The inventory and interpretation are offered each fall semester. Students are encouraged to take the 16PF during their Sophomore or Junior years. The test will be given on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at 9:25 in Lindsay 214. There is a $12.50 charge to help defray the cost. Please sign up and make payment in the Department of Religious Studies office suite (Lindsay 225) by noon Wednesday, October 22. Checks should be make to Gardner-Webb University. Please email or call me at 406-4460 or Dr. Ron Williams at 406-3936 should you have any questions. |
We also have an Image Consultant coming to speak to them from Charlotte.
(Ms. Sonya Barnes works with executives all over the east coast on improving
their image in the corporate world.) The dinner will also have a
fashion show representing business attire and business casual. We
believe this information will help our seniors to have a competitive edge
in interviewing, and we need your help to encourage them to come.
This event is on Thursday evening October 2nd from 7-9:30. The cost
of the event is
$10.00. For more information, please have students contact
our office inWashburn Hall or call us at 4562. Thank you,

Subject: Web gradebook for R311A |
Your Name,
Below are instructions for accessing your grades over the internet at Micrograde's Webgrade site. This page can be accessed 24h7d in Web Gradebook under Your Choices in your class courseroom (click this hyperlink for access). It's located at the bottom of the list. Here are some important instructions.
3. Also, the updated MicroGrade system allows for two email addresses. If you have a second address, please supply it to me and I will enter it into the gradebook. This will help insure that grade reports come through okay. Hopefully, this will simplify the grade reporting process for both you and me. I'm using this system because the GWU Blackboard is both unreliable and grades would have to be manually entered into it. The WebGrade system is linked to the version of the electronic gradebook that I use and uploading the files is a mere click of a button after the gradebook has been update. Dr. Cranford --

Some Items of Note:
1. The development of the Religion 311 course room is just now getting underway at the beginning of summer. The various aspects of its development will continue periodically through the summer months so that everything will be in final form by the beginning of the fall semester. 2. This means that the course design is also in process and is not yet finalized. With multiple sections already scheduled a flexible structure is being developed to accommodate classes with different numbers of students enrolled. 3. Check the course room occasionally for insight
into how the structure is being developed.

My philosophy of teaching the upper level
undergraduate courses stresses the importance of each student developing
skills in handling the text of the Bible, not just learning the data inside
the scripture. Thus the course design will highlight skill development
as an essential part of the class.
This particular class focuses attention on the synoptic gospels. This means three areas of skill development: (1) learning what tools to use in the study of the gospel texts, as well as how to use them; (2) building on a basic exegetical foundation a layer of specialized interpretative strategies uniquely appropriate to gospel study; and (3) applying these two previous areas of skill development to extensive study of the gospel texts. |
