1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished1 among us,
2 just as those who from the beginning were2eyewitnesses and
servants3 of the word4 have handed them down to us, 3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated5 everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; 4 so that you might know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.6

1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, 2 just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent
Theophilus, 4 that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed.
1 Most honorable Theophilus: Many people have written accounts about
the events that took place1 among us. 2 They used as their source material the reports circulating among us from the early disciples and other eyewitnesses of what God has done in fulfillment of his promises. 3 Having carefully investigated all of these accounts from the beginning, I have decided to write a careful summary for you,
4 to reassure you of the truth of all you were taught.

FOOTNOTES:
F1: Or have been fulfilled.
1 As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us, 2 as they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of
the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you,
most noble Theophilus; 4 so that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching.
