1 In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He1
was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being by2
Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines
in the darkness, and the darkness did not
comprehend3 it. 6 There came4 a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He5 came for a witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He6 was not the light, but came that he might bear witness of the light. 9 There was the true light which,7 coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own,8 and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born9 not of blood,10 nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt11 among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the12 only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has13 a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' " 16 For of His fulness we14 have all received, and grace15 upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God,16 who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God;
3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made
that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. 9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. 15 (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'") 16 And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. |
1 In the beginning the Word
already existed. He was with God, and he was God. 2 He was in the beginning
with God. 3 He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't
make. 4 Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone.
5 The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish
it.
6 God sent John the Baptist 7 to tell everyone about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was only a witness to the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world. 10 But although the world was made through him, the world didn't recognize him when he came. 11 Even in his own land and among his own people, he was not accepted. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan – this rebirth comes from God. 14 So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.1 And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. 15 John pointed him out to the people. He shouted to the crowds, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Someone is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.'" 16 We have all benefited from the rich blessings he brought to us – one gracious blessing after another.2 17 For the law was given through Moses; God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But his only Son, who is himself God,3 is near to the Father's heart; he has told us about him. FOOTNOTES: F1: Greek grace and truth; also in 1:17. F2: Greek grace upon grace. F3: Some manuscripts read his one and only Son. |
1 From the first he was
the Word, and the Word was in relation with God and was God. 2 This Word
was from the first in relation with God. 3 All things came into existence
through him, and without him nothing was. 4 What came into existence in
him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light goes on
shining in the dark; it is not overcome by the dark.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came for witness, to give witness about the light, so that all men might have faith through him. 8 He himself was not the light: he was sent to give witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to every man, was then coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, the world which came into being through him, but the world had no knowledge of him. 11 He came to the things which were his and his people did not take him to their hearts. 12 To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name: 13 Whose birth was from God and not from blood, or from an impulse of the flesh and man's desire. 14 And so the Word became flesh and took a place among us for a time; and we saw his glory--such glory as is given to an only son by his father--saw it to be true and full of grace. 15 John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me. 16 From his full measure we have all been given grace on grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and the true way of life are ours through Jesus Christ. 18 No man has seen God at any time; the only Son, who is on the breast of the Father, he has made clear what God is. |
