| 1 And the Pharisees and some of the
scribes gathered together around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,
2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with
impure hands, that is, unwashed. 3 The Pharisees and all the Jews do not
eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions
of the elders; 4 and when they come from the market place, they do not
eat unless they cleanse94 themselves;
and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe,
such as the washing95 of cups and
pitchers and copper pots.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him,
"Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders,
but eat their bread with impure hands?" 6 And He said to them, "Rightly
did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors
Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 7 'But in vain
do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.' 8
Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men."
9 He was also saying to them, "You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him BE96 PUT TO DEATH'; 11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, anything of mine you might have been helped by is Corban (that is to say, given97 to God),' 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that." 14 And after He called the multitude to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the man which going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. [16 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear."] 17 And when leaving the multitude, He had entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him; 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is98 eliminated?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.) 20 And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications,99 thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy,100 slander, pride101 and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man." ------------------------ FOOTNOTES: F94: Or, sprinkle F95: Lit., baptizing F96: Lit., die the death F97: Or, a gift, an offering F98: Lit., goes out into the latrine F99: I.e., acts of sexual immorality F100: Lit., an evil eye F101: Or, arrogance |
1 Now when the Pharisees gathered together
to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw
that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. 3
(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their
hands, observing the tradition of the elders; 4 and when they come from
the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there
are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots
and vessels of bronze.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,
"Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders,
but eat with hands defiled?" 6 And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy
of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their
lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching
as doctrines the precepts of men.' 8 You leave the commandment of God,
and hold fast the tradition of men."
9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition! 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die'; 11 but you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is Corban' (that is, given to God) -- 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such things you do." 14 And he called the people to him again, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside a man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him." 7:16* [No text] 17 And when he had entered the house, and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters, not his heart but his stomach, and so passes on?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, "What comes out of a man is what defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man." |
1 One day some Pharisees
and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to confront Jesus.
2 They noticed that some of Jesus' disciples failed to follow the usual
Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. 3 (The Jews, especially the
Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands,26
as required by their ancient traditions. 4 Similarly, they eat nothing
bought from the market unless they have immersed their hands in water.
This is but one of many traditions they have clung to – such as their ceremony
of washing cups, pitchers, and kettles.27
) 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, "Why don't
your disciples follow our age-old customs? For they eat without first performing
the hand-washing ceremony." 6 Jesus replied, "You hypocrites! Isaiah was
prophesying about you when he said, 7 'These people honor me with their
lips, but their hearts are far away. Their worship is a farce, for they
replace God's commands with their own man-made teachings.'28
8 For you ignore God's specific laws and substitute your own traditions."
9 Then he said, "You reject God's laws in order to hold on to your own traditions. 10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: 'Honor your father and mother,' and 'Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.'29 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, 'Sorry, I can't help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I could have given to you.'30 12 You let them disregard their needy parents. 13 As such, you break the law of God in order to protect your own tradition. And this is only one example. There are many, many others." 14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. "All of you listen," he said, "and try to understand. 15 You are not defiled by what you eat; you are defiled by what you say and do!31 " 7:16100 17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowds, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the statement he had made. 18 "Don't you understand either?" he asked. "Can't you see that what you eat won't defile you? 19 Food doesn't come in contact with your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then comes out again." (By saying this, he showed that every kind of food is acceptable.) 20 And then he added, "It is the thought-life that defiles you. 21 For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, eagerness for lustful pleasure, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you and make you unacceptable to God." -------------------------- FOOTNOTES: F26: Greek washed with the fist. 1 Some Pharisees and teachers
of the Law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus. 2 They noticed
that some of his disciples were eating their food with hands that were
ritually unclean — that is, they had not washed them in the way the Pharisees
said people should. 3 (For the Pharisees, as well as the rest of the Jews,
follow the teaching they received from their ancestors: they do not eat
unless they wash their hands in the proper way; 4 nor do they eat anything
that comes from the market unless they wash it first.12
And they follow many other rules which they have received, such as the
proper way to wash cups, pots, copper bowls, and beds.13)
5 So the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law asked Jesus, "Why is it
that your disciples do not follow the teaching handed down by our ancestors,
but instead eat with ritually unclean hands?" 6 Jesus answered them, "How
right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you! You are hypocrites, just
as he wrote:28 "These people, says
God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from
me. 7 It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach human rules
as though they were my laws!' 8 You put aside God's command and obey human
teachings."
9 And Jesus continued, "You have a clever way of rejecting God's law in order to uphold your own teaching. 10 For Moses commanded, "Respect your father and your mother,' and, "If you curse your father or your mother, you are to be put to death.'29 11 But you teach that if people have something they could use to help their father or mother, but say, "This is Corban' (which means, it belongs to God), 12 they are excused from helping their father or mother. 13 In this way the teaching you pass on to others cancels out the word of God. And there are many other things like this that you do." 14 Then Jesus called the crowd to him once more and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand. 15 There is nothing that goes into you from the outside which can make you ritually unclean. Rather, it is what comes out of you that makes you unclean."14 17 When he left the crowd and went into the house, his disciples asked him to explain this saying. 18 "You are no more intelligent than the others," Jesus said to them. "Don't you understand? Nothing that goes into you from the outside can really make you unclean, 19 because it does not go into your heart but into your stomach and then goes on out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared that all foods are fit to be eaten.) 20 And he went on to say, "It is what comes out of you that makes you unclean. 21 For from the inside, from your heart, come the evil ideas which lead you to do immoral things, to rob, kill, 22 commit adultery, be greedy, and do all sorts of evil things; deceit, indecency, jealousy, slander, pride, and folly — 23 all these evil things come from inside you and make you unclean." ----------------------- FOOTNOTES: CROSS REFERENCES:
