The use of the study questions:

(1) The basis of class discussion and testing:

You should prepare for class discussion by systematically answering these questions in advance of the class session when they will be discussed. The sources of information for answering each question is specified in the question. See above section for explanation of the abbreviated code. You will be expected to be able to answer orally each question in the class discussion.

(2) The "take-home" exam option #3:

The explanations and guidelines are found on the Course Instructions page (Religion 101/304) (Religion 102/305).

The design of the study questions:

Frequently they contain a hyperlink which defines the source of information to be used in answering the question.
Occasionally, they define both printed and online optional sources that are to be used in answering the question.
Sometimes, no source of information is defined for answering the questions. In such instances, you are free to utilize all available sources for the answer.
As is mentioned in the guidelines, personal reflection is always to be at the heart of the answer to the questions. Simple copying of text material from the sources without reflecting upon the concepts sufficiently to cast them in your own words is unacceptable answering of the questions.

Understanding the Verbs defining the nature of the question:

Answer = Complete the answers to the specified discussion questions contained in the URL hyperlink.
Characterize = Describe the specified topic giving particular emphasis to traits, patterns of behavior etc. that provide insights into the character of a person or of a movement.
Compare and Contrast = Normally in narrative form rather than in outline form, describe the points of similarity and the points of difference between the two specified topics. In most instances, you should then offer reflections on the observed relation between the two topics.
Critically evaluate = First describe the specified topic, then assess both strengths and weaknesses of the viewpoint defined by the question always providing credible proof for your evaluations.
Define = Provide a basic description of the specified topic in the style of a dictionary/encyclopedia definition of a term. Also provide some reflection on the nature of the term.
Describe = Provide a basic description of the specified topic in narrative form, answering typical who, where, when, why kinds of questions as appropriate to the topic.
Develop a detailed portrait of... = Critically describe the emerging picture of the individual specified in the question using the designated sources.
Explain how... = Describe in detail the specified first topic, then relate it to the specified second topic in the question as defined by the question. Be sure to demonstrate clearly, in detail, and with justification the specified connection between the two topics.
Identify = From the specified sources, describe the required subject especially in relation to a defined topic.
List = Following the instructions in the question with this verb, provide a listing in correct sequence of the prescribed items.
Summarize = After reading through the specified sources, in narrative form rather than outline form reduce the material down to the basic points providing some reflection on the topic being discussed.
Trace = From the specified sources, outline the chronological progression of a person's life, or of a movement covering the duration of time defined by the question.
