This tutorial is a two step instruction guide:
1) Setting up a Note-File,
and 2) Using iPreach.

This file can be printed out for a handy reference to the procedures.

Note File Setup Using iPreach

Note-File Setup
The first thing you need to do is to set up a document file for saving the notes taken from the various sources, including iPreach, during the phase two segment of your research. Most of this material can then be copied and pasted into both the Phase Two Assignment document, as well as into the writing of the final draft of your Analysis Paper.
1. Set up your note file on your computer word processing software. The example here uses MS Word 2003. This will make sure no formatting problems develop in copying and pasting quotes etc. into the final draft of your document.

2. Set the parameters of the file as follows:

a. One inch margins on top, bottom, left and right margins.

b. Hyphenation turned on

c. Page numbers turned on

d. Make sure the font is set to Times-New Roman, 12 point.

e. Make sure the style is set to Normal.

Setting margins

1. Go into the File menu in upper left corner of your screen.

2. Click on Page Setup.... (You may have to scroll down a ways to bring it up on newer versions of Word.)

3. Under Margins, make sure that the fields for Top:, Bottom:, Left:, and Right: read 1". It should look like the picture to the right.

Turning on Hyphenation

1. Go into Tools, the Language, then Hyphenation, in order to get to the Hyphenation setting.

2. Make sure the settings match the second picture on your right: 0.1"

Turning on page numbers

1. Go into Insert, then Page Number... to get to the settings menu, as illustrated in the first picture on your right.

2. Make sure the setting matches the second picture (Page Numbers) on your right:

Position: Bottom of page
Alignment: Center

Setting font style and size

1. The setting should be Times New Roman font style.

2. The font size should be 12 point.

Make sure your settings match the picture to your right. Ordinarily, these two settings are the default settings, but make sure they are set this way to avoid trouble later on in the writing of the final draft of your paper.

Style Setting

Make sure the document style is set to Normal

This is the typical default setting, but it is very important that your notes file be set to this style guide in order to avoid major headaches with copying and pasting material from this file into the final draft document later.

Accessing and Using iPreach
Eight steps are described below. Simply scroll down each one making sure you understand the procedure.
1. Using your internet browser, log onto the GWU library web site.

In the GWU home page web site, http://www.gardner-webb.edu, it is located in the Current Student section under Dover Library in the Quick Links located at the bottom of the screen.

A direct link to the library home page is http://www.library.gardner-webb.edu/index.html

It is essential to go into iPreach through the GWU library web site, or else you will not be able to access the GWU subscription based access to iPreach.

2. Once in the GWU Dover Library homepage, you will need to click on the iPreach link.

It is located under Electronic Databases in the third column, about 2/3 of the way down.

Very important: by clicking on the [more info] hyperlink on the right side of the iPreach line, you can find a iPreach FAQ page that will answer many questions about navigating through the iPreach database.

3. You will need to login when the Server Login screen comes up.

This requires your GWU User name and Password that was supplied to you at the beginning of the semester from Information Services. This is a separate User ID and Password from the WebGrade ones that were given for accessing your grades through Cranfordville.com.  If you can't remember these, or have lost them, then check with GWU Information Services about securing them.

4. Click on Go in the next screen that comes up.
5. This screen (to the right) should come up.
If this screen doesn't quickly move on to the next screen, then place your cursor on the green background and left click it.

If you are denied access to iPreach, then click on this hyperlink to explore possible reasons.

6. This is the iPreach homepage. Note the options in the left column of either HTML or JAVA. See the FAQ for instructions on which one to use, especially if your computer is not set to handle java applets.

Note the Table of Contents section in the left column.

Regarding the Analysis Paper assignment, the following sections will contain sources useable in the assignment:

Commentary Series:
The commentary sets, two of which are required in the paper, are located in the third row of this section. Of the seven commentary sets in this section, only the Daily Study Bible is excluded from the list of usable commentaries. If the others have the OT book you're studying, then they can be used. Not all of the commentary series are complete sets yet. Some are still in the process of being written.

Dictionary, Handbooks, and One Volume Commentary:

Located in the fourth row of the ToC.

The Interpreter's One Volume Commentary on the Bible meets the requirement for a single volume commentary in the paper guidelines.

The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible meets the requirement for one Bible dictionary to be used in the paper assignment.

7. Next is finding the material you are seeking, then copying and pasting them into the Notes file that you created at the beginning.

Let's assume that one of your Phase One questions was "Who is Aaron?" You want to copy and paste a possible quote about Aaron from the Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible listing of Aaron.

First, find Aaron in the Bible dictionary, under A. Then, highlight the quote you want to use with your cursor, as seen in the picture to your right.  Hold down the Control (Ctl) key and then hit the C key, in order to copy the material into your clip board for pasting.

8. Next open your Notes file in your word processor, and again holding down the Control key, hit the V key to paste the quote into your Notes file. Be sure to save the file after each paste so that you don't loose info.  Above the quote enter the necessary bibliography material, as given in the example, so that you can easily site the source of this quote in the final draft of your paper. See the example to the right.

Just repeat this process of copying and pasting materials into your Note files until you have finished researching the materials for your paper. This material can then be inserted under step 5 in the Phase Two assignment in regard to your earlier question about "Who is Aaron?", as well as being available to use in the writing of the final draft of your paper.
