Patch Version
2.20 If with Christ you died off from the standards of the world, why do
you keep insisting on the world’s way of living? “Keep away from such-and-such”;
“Don’t drink that”; “Hands off this.” These are all perishable things,
and the rules and teachings regarding them are purely human. Sure, it all
sounds terrific with its daily devotions, its self-commitment and its rigorous
disciplines, but it isn’t worth a hoot to anybody who wants to live above
a human level.
3.1 So then, if you’ve been given new life in Christ, go after the things
of the New Order, in which Christ rules with God’s authority. Set your
hearts on the ways of the New Order, not on those of the world. For you
all died, and your Christian life is now wrapped up in God. Whenever Christ—our
life—is made real, then you too shall be made real with him in a wonderful
way.
5 That’s why you should kill off those areas of your life which are worldly,
such as whoring, gutterbugging, uncontrolled emotions, wicked craving,
and being too rich, which is false worship. These are the things which
bring down God’s wrath. And at one time, when you were living in the old
ways, you yourselves practiced such things. But now you all must have no
truck with all that nor with blowing your top, getting all steamed up,
acting ugly, throwing your weight around and running off at the mouth with
dirty jokes. Quit playing false with one another, since you have shucked
off the old man and his habits, and have put on the new one which is constantly
being remade to the specifications of its Creator’s pattern. The pattern
for the new man is the same for a Negro and a white man, a church member
and non-church-member, foreigner, Mexican, employee, employer, but Christ
is everything in everybody.
12 Wear the clothes, then, that will identify you as people whom God has
selected and dedicated and loved. Your outfit should include a tender heart,
kindness, genuine humility, loyalty, persistence. Put up with one another,
and freely forgive each other if one has a gripe against somebody. You
all forgive as freely as the Lord forgave you. Over all these things wear
love, which is the robe of maturity. And let Christ’s peace, into which
you were called as one fellowship, order your lives. And be thankful for
it. Let Christ’s nature find abundant lodging among you. Teach and correct
each other with great wisdom. With joy in your hearts sing hymns and songs
and spirituals to God. And no matter what you’re doing, by word or deed,
let everything be in the name of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks
through him to the Father-God.

Living Translation
2.20
You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the evil powers
of this world. So why do you keep on following rules of the world, such
as, 21 "Don't handle, don't eat, don't touch." 22 Such rules are mere human
teaching about things that are gone as soon as we use them. 23 These rules
may seem wise because they require strong devotion, humility, and severe
bodily discipline. But they have no effect when it comes to conquering
a person's evil thoughts and desires.
3. 1 Since you have been
raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven,
where Christ sits at God's right hand in the place of honor and power.
2 Let heaven fill your thoughts. Do not think only about things down here
on earth. 3 For you died when Christ died, and your real life is hidden
with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your real life, is revealed
to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
5 So put to death the sinful,
earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual sin,
impurity, lust, and shameful desires. Don't be greedy for the good things
of this life, for that is idolatry. 6 God's terrible anger will come upon
those who do such things. 7 You used to do them when your life was still
part of this world. 8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious
behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don't lie to each other, for you
have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 In
its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually
being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this
new nature within you. 11 In this new life, it doesn't matter if you are
a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized,
F11 slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of
us.
12 Since God chose you to
be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted
mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 You must make allowance
for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember,
the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 And the most important
piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together
in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in
your hearts. For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace.
And always be thankful. 16 Let the words of Christ, in all their richness,
live in your hearts and make you wise. Use his words to teach and counsel
each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful
hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of
the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father. |

International Readers Version
2.20 The people of the world
believe certain basic things. You died with Christ as far as things like
that are concerned. So why do you act as if you still belong to the world?
Here are the rules you follow. 21 "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not
touch!" 22 Rules like that are all going to die out as time goes by. They
are only based on human rules and teachings. 23 It is true that those rules
seem wise. Because of them, people give themselves over to their own kind
of worship. They pretend they aren't proud. They treat their bodies very
badly. But rules like that don't help. They don't stop people from chasing
after sinful pleasures.
3. 1 You have been raised
up with Christ. So think about things that are in heaven. That is where
Christ is. He is sitting at God's right hand. 2 Think about things that
are in heaven. Don't think about things that are on earth. 3 You died.
Now your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 Christ is your life. When
he appears again, you also will appear with him in heaven's glory.
5 So put to death anything
that belongs to your earthly nature. Get rid of your sexual sins and unclean
acts. Don't let your feelings get out of control. Remove from your life
all evil longings. Stop always wanting more and more. You might as well
be worshiping statues of gods. 6 God's anger is going to come because of
those things. 7 That's the way you lived at one time in your life. 8 But
now here are the kinds of things you must get rid of. You must put away
anger, rage, hate and lies. Let no dirty words come out of your mouths.
9 Don't lie to each other. You have gotten rid of your old way of life
and its habits. 10 You have started living a new life. It is being made
new so that what you know has the Creator's likeness. 11 Here there is
no Greek or Jew. There is no difference between those who are circumcised
and those who are not. There is no rude outsider, or even a Scythian. There
is no slave or free person. But Christ is everything. And he is in everything.
12 You are God's chosen
people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness
as if they were your clothes. Don't be proud. Be gentle and patient. 13
Put up with each other. Forgive the things you are holding against one
another. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all of those
good things put on love. Love holds them all together perfectly as if they
were one. 15 Let the peace that Christ gives rule in your hearts. As parts
of one body, you were appointed to live in peace. And be thankful. 16 Let
Christ's word live in you like a rich treasure. Teach and correct each
other wisely. Sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing with thanks
in your hearts to God. 17 Do everything you say or do in the name of the
Lord Jesus. Always give thanks to God the Father through Christ. |

2.20 If you were made free,
by your death with Christ, from the rules of the world, why do you put
yourselves under the authority of orders 21 Which say there may be no touching,
tasting, or taking in your hands, 22 (Rules which are all to come to an
end with their use) after the orders and teaching of men? 23 These things
seem to have a sort of wisdom in self-ordered worship and making little
of oneself, and being cruel to the body, not honouring it by giving it
its natural use.
3. 1 If then you have a
new life with Christ, give your attention to the things of heaven, where
Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Keep your mind on the higher
things, not on the things of earth. 3 For your life on earth is done, and
you have a secret life with Christ in God. 4 At the coming of Christ who
is our life, you will be seen with him in glory.
5 Then put to death your
bodies which are of the earth; wrong use of the flesh, unclean things,
passion, evil desires and envy, which is the worship of strange gods; 6
Because of which the wrath of God comes on those who go against his orders;
7 Among whom you were living in the past, when you did such things. 8 But
now it is right for you to put away all these things; wrath, passion, bad
feeling, curses, unclean talk; 9 Do not make false statements to one another;
because you have put away the old man with all his doings, 10 And have
put on the new man, which has become new in knowledge after the image of
his maker; 11 Where there is no Greek or Jew, no one with circumcision
or without circumcision, no division between nations, no servant or free
man: but Christ is all and in all.
12 As saints of God, then,
holy and dearly loved, let your behaviour be marked by pity and mercy,
kind feeling, a low opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, and a power of
undergoing all things; 13 Being gentle to one another and having forgiveness
for one another, if anyone has done wrong to his brother, even as the Lord
had forgiveness for you: 14 And more than all, have love; the only way
in which you may be completely joined together. 15 And let the peace of
Christ be ruling in your hearts, as it was the purpose of God for you to
be one body; and give praise to God at all times. 16 Let the word of Christ
be in you in all wealth of wisdom; teaching and helping one another with
songs of praise and holy words, making melody to God with grace in your
hearts. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in act, do all in the name of

to things which become useless once they are used; they are only human
rules and teachings. 23 Of course such rules appear to be based on wisdom
in their forced worship of angels, and false humility, and severe treatment
of the body; but they have no real value in controlling physical passions.
3.1 You have been raised
to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven,
where Christ sits on his throne at the right-hand side of God.2 Keep your
minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth.3 For you have
died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 Your real life is Christ
and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory!
5 You must put to
death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality,
indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry).
6 Because of such things God’s anger will come upon those who do not obey
him. 7 At one time you yourselves used to live according to such desires,
when your life was dominated by them. 8 But now you must get rid of all
these things: anger, passion, and hateful feelings. No insults or obscene
talk must ever come from your lips.9 Do not lie to one another, for you
have taken off the old self with its habits 10 and have put on the new
self. This is the new being which God, its Creator, is constantly renewing
in his own image, in order to bring you to a full knowledge of himself.
11 As a result, there is no longer any distinction between Gentiles and
Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, savages, slaves, and free,
but Christ is all, Christ is in all.
12 You are the people of
God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.13 Be tolerant
with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint
against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has
forgiven you. 14 And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things
together in perfect unity. 15 The peace that Christ gives is to guide you
in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called
you together in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Christ’s message in all
its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct each other with
all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving
in your hearts. 17 Everything you do or say, then, should be done in the
name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks through him to God the Father. |
The
Message
2.20 So, then, if with Christ
you've put all that pretentious and infantile religion behind you, why
do you let yourselves be bullied by it? 21 "Don't touch this! Don't taste
that! Don't go near this!" 22 Do you think things that are here today and
gone tomorrow are worth that kind of attention? 23 Such things sound impressive
if said in a deep enough voice. They even give the illusion of being pious
and humble and ascetic. But they're just another way of showing off, making
yourselves look important.
3.1 So if you’re serious
about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue
the things over which Christ presides. 2 Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the
ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be
alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See
things from his perspective. 3 Your old life is dead. Your new life, which
is your real life—even though invisible to spectators — is with Christ
in God. He is your life. 4 When Christ (your real life, remember) shows
up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious
you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.
5 And that means killing
off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity,
lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing
whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings
instead of by God. 6 It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about
to explode in anger. 7 It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that
stuff and not knowing any better. 8 But you know better now, so make sure
it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity,
dirty talk. 9 Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life.
It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put
in the fire. 10 Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your
new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All
the old fashions are now obsolete. 11 Words like Jewish and non-Jewish,
religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth,
slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ,
everyone is included in Christ.
12 So, chosen by God for
this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion,
kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. 13 Be even-tempered, content
with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and
completely as the Master forgave you. 14 And regardless of what else you
put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without
it. 15 Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step
with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate
thankfulness. 16 Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the
house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another
using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! 17 Let
every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name
of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. |
The
Douay-Rheims Bible
2.20 If then you be dead with
Christ from the elements of this world, why do you yet decree as though
living in the world? 21 Touch not: taste not: handle not. 22 Which all
are unto destruction by the very use, according to the precepts and doctrines
of men. 23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in superstition and
humility, and not sparing the body; not in any honour to the filling of
the flesh.
3. 1 Therefore if you be
risen with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is sitting
at the right hand of God. 2 Mind the things that are above, not the things
that are upon the earth. 3 For you are dead: and your life is hid with
Christ in God. 4 When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also
shall appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your
members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil
concupiscence and covetousness, which is the service of idols. 6 For which
things the wrath of God cometh upon the children of unbelief. 7 In which
you also walked some time, when you lived in them. 8 But now put you also
all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your
mouth. 9 Lie not one to another: stripping yourselves of the old man with
his deeds, 10 And putting on the new, him who is renewed unto knowledge,
according to the image of him that created him. 11 Where there is neither
Gentile nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian,
bond nor free. But Christ is all and in all.
12 Put ye on therefore,
as the elect of God, holy and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity,
humility, modesty, patience: 13 Bearing with one another and forgiving
one another, if any have a complaint against another. Even as the Lord
hath forgiven you, so do you also. 14 But above all these things have charity,
which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of Christ rejoice
in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly: in all wisdom, teaching
and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing
in grace in your hearts to God. 17 All whatsoever you do in word or in
work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God
and the Father by him. |

New Testament
2.20 If you have died with Christ
and have escaped from the world's rudimentary notions, why, as though your
life still belonged to the world, do you submit to such precepts as 21
"Do not handle this;" "Do not taste that;" "Do not touch that other thing"
-- 22 referring to things which are all intended to be used up and perish--in
obedience to mere human injunctions and teachings? 23 These rules have
indeed an appearance of wisdom where self-imposed worship exists, and an
affectation of humility and an ascetic severity. But not one of them is
of any value in combating the indulgence of our lower natures.
3. 1 If however you
have risen with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is,
enthroned at God's right hand. 2 Give your minds to the things that are
above, not to the things that are on the earth. 3 For you have died, and
your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ appears--He is our
true Life--then you also will appear with Him in glory.
5 Therefore put to death
your earthward inclinations--fornication, impurity, sensual passion, unholy
desire, and all greed, for that is a form of idolatry. 6 It is on account
of these very sins that God's anger is coming, 7 and you also were once
addicted to them, while you were living under their power. 8 But now you
must rid yourselves of every kind of sin--angry and passionate outbreaks,
ill-will, evil speaking, foul-mouthed abuse--so that these may never soil
your lips. 9 Do not speak falsehoods to one another, for you have stripped
off the old self with its doings, 10 and have clothed yourselves with the
new self which is being remoulded into full knowledge so as to become like
Him who created it. 11 In that new creation there is neither Greek nor
Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free
man, but Christ is everything and is in all of us.
12 Clothe yourselves therefore,
as God's own people holy and dearly loved, with tender-heartedness, kindness,
lowliness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; 13 bearing with one another
and readily forgiving each other, if any one has a grievance against another.
Just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also must forgive. 14 And over all
these put on love, which is the perfect bond of union; 15 and let the peace
which Christ gives settle all questionings in your hearts, to which peace
indeed you were called as belonging to His one Body; and be thankful. 16
Let the teaching concerning Christ remain as a rich treasure in your hearts.
In all wisdom teach and admonish one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual
songs, and sing with grace in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do,
in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, and let
it be through Him that you give thanks to God the Father. |
