with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of flesh
in the circumcision of Christ; 12 and you were buried with him in baptism,
in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of
God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in trespasses
and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him,
having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 having canceled the bond which
stood against us with its legal demands; this he set aside, nailing it
to the cross. 15 He disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public

16 Therefore let no one
pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a
festival or a new moon or a sabbath. 17 These are only a shadow of what
is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify
you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, taking his stand
on visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding

6 And now just
as you trusted Christ to save you, trust him, too, for each day's problems;
live in vital union with him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him and draw
up nourishment from him. See that you go on growing in the Lord, and become
strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow
with joy and thanksgiving of all he has done.
8 don't let other spoil
your faith and joy with their philosophies, their wrong and shallow answers
built on men's thoughts and ideas, instead of on what christ has said.
9 For in christ there is all of God in a human body; 10 so you have
everything when you have Christ, and you are filled with God through
your union with christ. he is the highest Ruler, with authority over every
other person.
11 When you came to Christ
he set up free from your evil desires, not by a bodily operation of circumcision
but by a spiritual operation, the baptism of your souls. 12 For in baptism
you see how your old, evil nature died with him and was buried with him,
and then you came up out of death with him into a new life because you
trusted the Word of the mighty God who raised Christ from the dead.
13 You were dead in sins,
and your sinful desires were not yet cut away. Then he gave you a share
in the very life of Christ, for he forgave all your sins, 14 and blotted
out the charges proved against you, the list of his commandments which
you had not obeyed. He took this list of sins and destroyed it by nailing
it to Christ's cross. 15 In this way God took away Satan's power to accuse
you of sin, and God openly displayed to the whole world Christ's triumph
at the cross where your sins were all taken away.
16 So don't let anyone criticize
you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating Jewish holidays and
feasts or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these were only temporary
rules that ended when Christ came. They were only shadows of the real thing
-- of Christ himself. 18 Don't let anyone declare you lost when you refuse
to worship angels, as they say you must. They have seen a vision, they
say, and know you should. These proud men (though they claim to be humble)
have a very clever imagination. 19 But they are not connected to Christ,
the Head to which all of us who are his body are joined; for we are joined
together by his strong sinews and we grow only as we get our nourishment
and strength from God. |

Living Translation
6 And now, just as you
accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to live in obedience
to him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from
him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were
taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all he has done.
8 Don't let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding
nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this
world,F7 and not from Christ. 9 For in Christ the fullness of
God lives in a human body,F8 10 and you are complete through
your union with Christ. He is the Lord over every ruler and authority in
the universe. 11 When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised," but not
by a physical procedure. It was a spiritual procedure – the cutting away
of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were
baptized. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted
the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 You were dead
because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away.
Then God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled
the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed
it by nailing it to Christ's cross. 15 In this way, God disarmed the evil
rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them
on the cross of Christ.
16 So don't let anyone condemn
you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days
or new-moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules were only shadows
of the real thing, Christ himself. 18 Don't let anyone condemn you by insisting
on self-denial. And don't let anyone say you must worship angels, even
though they say they have had visions about this. These people claim to
be so humble, but their sinful minds have made them proud. 19 But they
are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For we are joined together
in his body by his strong sinews, and we grow only as we get our nourishment
and strength from God.

6 So then, just as you received
Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in
him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with

and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic
principles of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the
fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given
fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. 11
In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature,[7]
not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision
done by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with
him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful

it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and
authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by
the cross.[10]
16 Therefore do not let
anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious
festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow
of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of
angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail
about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle
notions. 19 He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body,

6 You received Christ Jesus
as Lord. So keep on living in him. 7 Have your roots in him. Build yourselves
up in him. Grow strong in what you believe, just as you were taught. Be
more thankful than ever before. 8 Make sure no one captures you. They will
try to capture you by using false reasoning that has no meaning. Their
ideas depend on human teachings. They also depend on the basic things the
people of this world believe. They don't depend on Christ.
9 God's whole nature is living in Christ in human form. 10 Because
you belong to Christ, you have everything you need. He is the ruler over
every power and authority. 11 When you received Christ, you were also circumcised
by putting away your sinful nature. Human hands didn't circumcise you.
Christ did. 12 When you were baptized, you were buried together with him.
You were raised to life together with him by believing in God's power.
God raised Jesus from the dead. 13 At one time you were dead in your sins.
Your sinful nature was not circumcised. But God gave you new life together
with Christ. He forgave us all of our sins. 14 He wiped out the written
Law with its rules. The Law was against us. It opposed us. He took it away
and nailed it to the cross. 15 He took away the weapons of the powers and
authorities. He made a public show of them. He won the battle over them
by dying on the cross.
16 So don't let anyone judge
you because of what you eat or drink. Don't let anyone judge you about
holy days. I'm talking about special feasts and New Moons and Sabbath days.
17 They are only a shadow of the things that were going to come. But what
is real is found in Christ. 18 Some people enjoy pretending they aren't
proud. They worship angels. But don't let people like that hold you back
from winning the prize. They tell you every little thing about what they
have seen. Their minds are not guided by the Holy Spirit. So they are proud
of their useless ideas. 19 They aren't connected to the Head. But the whole
body grows from the Head. The muscles and tendons hold the body together.
And God causes it to grow. |

Bible
in Basic English
6 As, then, you took Christ
Jesus the Lord, so go on in him, 7 Rooted and based together in him, strong
in the faith which the teaching gave you, giving praise to God at all times.
8 Take care that no one takes you away by force, through man's wisdom and
deceit, going after the beliefs of men and the theories of the world, and
not after Christ: 9 For in him all the wealth of God's being has a living
form, 10 And you are complete in him, who is the head of all rule and authority:
11 In whom you had a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off
of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ; 12 Having been
put to death with him in baptism, by which you came to life again with
him, through faith in the working of God, who made him come back from the
dead. 13 And you, being dead through your sins and the evil condition of
your flesh, to you, I say, he gave life together with him, and forgiveness
of all our sins; 14 Having put an end to the handwriting of the law which
was against us, taking it out of the way by nailing it to his cross; 15
Having made himself free from the rule of authorities and powers, he put
them openly to shame, glorying over them in it.
16 For this reason let no
man be your judge in any question of food or drink or feast days or new
moons or Sabbaths: 17 For these are an image of the things which are to
come; but the body is Christ's. 18 Let no man take your reward from you
by consciously making little of himself and giving worship to angels; having
his thoughts fixed on the things which he has seen, being foolishly lifted
up in his natural mind, 19 And not joined to the Head, from whom all the
body, being given strength and kept together through its joins and bands,
has its growth with the increase of God. |
Good
News for Modern Man: Today's English Version
6 Since you have accepted Christ
Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. 7 Keep your roots deep in him, build
your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught.
And be filled with thanksgiving. 8 See to it, then, that no one enslaves
you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from
the teachings handed down by human beings and from the ruling spirits of
the universe, and not from Christ. 9 For the full content of divine nature
lives in Christ, in his humanity, 10 and you have been given full life
in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.
11 In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision
that is made by human beings, but with the circumcision made by Christ,
which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self. 12 For
when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you
were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of
God, who raised him from death. 13 You were at one time spiritually dead
because of your sins and because you were Gentiles without the Law. But
God has now brought you to life with Christ. God forgave us all our sins;
14 he canceled the unfavorable record of our debts with its binding rules
and did away with it completely by nailing it to the cross. 15 And on that
cross Christ freed himself from the power of the spiritual rulers and authorities;F5
he made a public spectacle of them by leading them as captives in his victory
procession.
16 So let no one make rules
about what you eat or drink or about holy days or the New Moon Festival
or the Sabbath. 17 All such things are only a shadow of things in the future;
the reality is Christ. 18 Do not allow yourselves to be condemned by anyone
who claims to be superior because of special visions and who insists on
false humility and the worship of angels. For no reason at all, such people
are all puffed up by their human way of thinking 19 and have stopped holding
on to Christ, who is the head of the body. Under Christ's control the whole
body is nourished and held together by its joints and ligaments, and it
grows as God wants it to grow.

The
Message
6 My counsel for you is simple
and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you've been given. You received
Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. 7 You're deeply rooted in him.
You're well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now
do what you've been taught. School's out; quit studying the subject and
start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. 8 Watch
out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk.
They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything.
They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and
the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that's not the way of Christ.
9 Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him
clearly. You don't need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize
the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him.
10 When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His
power extends over everything. 11 Entering into this fullness is not something
you figure out or achieve. It's not a matter of being circumcised or keeping
a long list of laws. No, you're already in - insiders - not through some
secretive initiation rite but rather through what Christ has already gone
through for you, destroying the power of sin. 12 If it's an initiation
ritual you're after, you've already been through it by submitting to baptism.
Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it
was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. 13
When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding
to God. God brought you alive - right along with Christ! Think of it! All
sins forgiven, 14 the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled
and nailed to Christ's Cross. 15 He stripped all the spiritual tyrants
in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked
through the streets.
16 So don't put up with
anyone pressuring you in details of diet, worship services, or holy days.
17 All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the
substance is Christ. 18 Don't tolerate people who try to run your life,
ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession
with angels and that you seek out visions. They're a lot of hot air, that's
all they are. 19 They're completely out of touch with the source of life,
Christ, who puts us together in one piece, whose very breath and blood
flow through us. He is the Head and we are the body. We can grow up healthy
in God only as he nourishes us. |

Douay-Rheims Bible
6 As therefore you have received
Jesus Christ the Lord, walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him and
confirmed in the faith, as also you have learned: abounding in him in thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest any man cheat you by philosophy and vain deceit: according
to the tradition of men according to the elements of the world and not
according to Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead
corporeally. 10 And you are filled in him, who is the head of all principality
and power. 11 In whom also you are circumcised with circumcision not made
by hand in despoiling of the body of the flesh: but in the circumcision
of Christ. 12 Buried with him in baptism: in whom also you are risen again
by the faith of the operation of God who hath raised him up from the dead.
13 And you, when you were dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your
flesh, he hath quickened together with him, forgiving you all offences:
14 Blotting out the handwriting of the decree that was against us, which
was contrary to us. And he hath taken the same out of the way, fastening
it to the cross. 15 And despoiling the principalities and powers, he hath
exposed them confidently in open shew, triumphing over them in himself.
16 Let no man therefore
judge you in meat or in drink or in respect of a festival day or of the
new moon or of the sabbaths, 17 Which are a shadow of things to come: but
the body is of Christ. 18 Let no man seduce you, willing in humility and
religion of angels, walking in the things which he hath not seen, in vain
puffed up by the sense of his flesh: 19 And not holding the head, from
which the whole body, by joints and bands, being supplied with nourishment
and compacted, groweth into the increase of God. |

New Testament
6 As therefore you have received
the Christ, even Jesus our Lord, live and act in vital union with Him;
7 having the roots of your being firmly planted in Him, and continually
building yourselves up in Him, and always being increasingly confirmed
in the faith as you were taught it, and abounding in it with thanksgiving.
8 Take care lest there be some one who leads you away as prisoners by means
of his philosophy and idle fancies, following human traditions and the
world's crude notions instead of following Christ. 9 For it is in Christ
that the fulness of God's nature dwells embodied, and in Him you are made
complete, 10 and He is the Lord of all princes and rulers. 11 In Him also
you were circumcised with a circumcision not performed by hand, when you
threw off your sinful nature in true Christian circumcision; 12 having
been buried with Him in your baptism, in which you were also raised with
Him through faith produced within you by God who raised Him from among
the dead. 13 And to you--dead as you once were in your transgressions and
in the uncircumcision of your natural state--He has nevertheless given
Life with Himself, having forgiven us all our transgressions. 14 The bond,
with its requirements, which was in force against us and was hostile to
us, He cancelled, and cleared it out of the way, nailing it to His Cross.
15 And the hostile princes and rulers He shook off from Himself,
and boldly displayed them as His conquests, when by the Cross He triumphed
over them.
16 Therefore suffer
no one to sit in judgement on you as to eating or drinking or with regard
to a festival, a new moon or a sabbath. 17 These were a shadow of things
that were soon to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no
one defraud you of your prize, priding himself on his humility and on his
worship of the angels, and taking his stand on the visions he has seen,
and idly puffed up with his unspiritual thoughts. 19 Such a one does not
keep his hold upon Christ, the Head, from whom the Body, in all its parts
nourished and strengthened by its points of contact and its connections,
grows with a divine growth. |
