INTRODUCTION1
.
Hosea was a prophet of the Northern Kingdom. His work began before the

death of Jeroboam II and continued until the fall of Samaria about 750 B.C. During this

time, Israel was in a state of constant turmoil internally and externally. Israel was under

threat of invasion on all sides by its neighbors. Internally, there was chaotic bloodbath for

the throne. Hosea witnessed seven monarchs come and go after Jeroboam's death.

Economically, the state was prosperous due to the fertile land and foreign trade. The

country was overrun by the worship of Baal, ultimately leading to its downfall. Hosea's

last speech forecasted the fall of Samaria at the hands of the Assyrians as a result of

God's wrathful judgement for Israel's sin.

"Hosea is the first book of the Twelve Prophets in the Old Testament canon."2

It is the only book of a prophet from the Northern Kingdom. It usually is divided into

two sections. Chapters 1-3 depict the relationship of God and Israel by comparing it to

Hosea's marriage to Gomer, his unfaithful wife. Chapters 4-14 are a broad collection of

oracles communicating God's word to Israel. Hos. 5:15-6:3 falls under the oracles

concerning Israel. These verses warn of a threat against Israel unless true repentance

occurs. This oracle helps establish the fact that God does not tolerate idol worship or

superficial sacrifice and his judgement will come.
