Matthew 13:53-58
53 When Jesus had finished these parables,
he left that place. 54 He came to his hometown and began to teach the peoplein
their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, "Where did this
man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? 55 Is not this the carpenter's
son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James
and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with
us? Where then did this man get all this?" 57 And they took offense at
him. But Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honor except in
their own country and in their own house." 58 And he did not do many deeds
of power there, because of their unbelief. |
Mark 6:1-6
1 He left that place and came
to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the sabbath he began
to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They
said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been
given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3 Is
not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James
and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?"
And they took offense at him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are
not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and
in their own house." 5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that
he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6 And he was amazed
at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. |
Matthew 27:50-56
50 Then Jesus cried again with
a loud voice and breathed his last. 51 At that moment the curtain of the
temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks
were split. 52 The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints
who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 After his resurrection they came
out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now
when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus,
saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said, "Truly
this man was God's Son!" 55 Many women were also there, looking on from
a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had provided for him.
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James
and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. |
Mark 15:33-41
33 When it was noon, darkness
came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 At three o'clock
Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which
means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 35 When some of the
bystanders heard it, they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah." 36
And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and
gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will
come to take him down." 37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his
last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
39 Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he
breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was God's Son!" 40 There were
also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene,
and Mary the mother of James the younger
and of Joses, and Salome. 41 These used to follow him and provided
for him when he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had
come up with him to Jerusalem. |
Mark 16:1-8
1 When the sabbath was
over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James,
and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very
early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to
the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, "Who will roll away the
stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" 4 When they looked up, they
saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.
5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe,
sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them,
"Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.
He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid
him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you
to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you." 8 So they went
out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and
they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. |
Luke 24:1-12
1 But on the first day of the
week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they
had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when
they went in, they did not find the body. 4 While they were perplexed about
this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5 The women
were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to
them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but
has risen. 6 Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7
that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and
on the third day rise again." 8 Then they remembered his words, 9 and returning
from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. 10
Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother
of James, and the other women with
them
who told this to the apostles. 11 But these words seemed to them an idle
tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the
tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then
he went home, amazed at what had happened. |
Acts 12:5-19
5 While Peter was kept in prison,
the church prayed fervently to God for him. 6 The very night before Herod
was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping
between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch
over the prison. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone
in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, "Get up
quickly." And the chains fell off his wrists. 8 The angel said to him,
"Fasten your belt and put on your sandals." He did so. Then he said to
him, "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me." 9 Peter went out and followed
him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel's help was
real; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 After they had passed the first
and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city.
It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked
along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. 11 Then Peter came to himself
and said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me
from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting."
12 As soon as he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother
of John whose other name was Mark, where many had gathered and were praying.
13 When he knocked at the outer gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer.
14 On recognizing Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of
opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the
gate. 15 They said to her, "You are out of your mind!" But she insisted
that it was so. They said, "It is his angel." 16 Meanwhile Peter continued
knocking; and when they opened the gate, they saw him and were amazed.
17 He motioned to them with his hand to be silent, and described for them
how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he added, "Tell
this to James and to the believers." Then
he left and went to another place. 18 When morning came, there was no small
commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 When Herod
had searched for him and could not find him, he examined the guards and
ordered them to be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea
and stayed there. |
Acts 15:6-35
6 The apostles and the elders
met together to consider this matter. 7 After there had been much debate,
Peter stood up and said to them, "My brothers, you know that in the early
days God made a choice among you, that I should be the one through whom
the Gentiles would hear the message of the good news and become believers.
8 And God, who knows the human heart, testified to them by giving them
the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us; 9 and in cleansing their hearts
by faith he has made no distinction between them and us. 10 Now therefore
why are you putting God to the test by placing on the neck of the disciples
a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On
the contrary, we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the
Lord Jesus, just as they will." 12 The whole assembly kept silence, and
listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders
that God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13 After they finished
speaking, James replied, "My brothers, listen
to me. 14 Simeon has related how God first looked favorably on the Gentiles,
to take from among them a people for his name. 15 This agrees with the
words of the prophets, as it is written, 16 "After this I will return,
and I will rebuild the dwelling of David, which has fallen; from its ruins
I will rebuild it,and I will set it up, 17 so that all other peoples may
seek the Lord — even all the Gentiles over whom my name has been
called. Thus says the Lord, who has been making these things18 known from
long ago.' 19 Therefore I have reached the decision that we should not
trouble those Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but we should write to
them to abstain only from things polluted by idols and from fornication
and from whatever has been strangled and from blood. 21 For in every city,
for generations past, Moses has had those who proclaim him, for he has
been read aloud every sabbath in the synagogues."
22 Then the apostles
and the elders, with the consent of the whole church, decided to choose
men from among their members and to send them to Antioch with Paul and
Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the
brothers, 23 with the following letter: "The brothers, both the apostles
and the elders, to the believers of Gentile origin in Antioch and Syria
and Cilicia, greetings. 24 Since we have heard that certain persons who
have gone out from us, though with no instructions from us, have said things
to disturb you and have unsettled your minds, 25 we have decided unanimously
to choose representatives and send them to you, along with our beloved
Barnabas and Paul, 26 who have risked their lives for the sake of our Lord
Jesus Christ. 27 We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves
will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good
to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further burden than these
essentials: 29 that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols
and from blood and from what is strangled and from fornication. If you
keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell."
30 So they were sent off
and went down to Antioch. When they gathered the congregation together,
they delivered the letter. 31 When its members read it, they rejoiced at
the exhortation. 32 Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, said
much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After they had been
there for some time, they were sent off in peace by the believers to those
who had sent them. 34 [no text] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch,
and there, with many others, they taught and proclaimed the word of the
Lord. |
Acts 21:15-26
15 After these days we got ready
and started to go up to Jerusalem. 16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea
also came along and brought us to the house of Mnason of Cyprus, an early
disciple, with whom we were to stay. 17 When we arrived in Jerusalem, the
brothers welcomed us warmly. 18 The next day Paul went with us to visit
James;
and all the elders were present. 19 After greeting them, he related
one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his
ministry. 20 When they heard it, they praised God. Then they said to him,
"You see, brother, how many thousands of believers there are among the
Jews, and they are all zealous for the law. 21 They have been told about
you that you teach all the Jews living among the Gentiles to forsake Moses,
and that you tell them not to circumcise their children or observe the
customs. 22 What then is to be done? They will certainly hear that you
have come. 23 So do what we tell you. We have four men who are under a
vow. 24 Join these men, go through the rite of purification with them,
and pay for the shaving of their heads. Thus all will know that there is
nothing in what they have been told about you, but that you yourself observe
and guard the law. 25 But as for the Gentiles who have become believers,
we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain what has
been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and
from fornication." 26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day, having
purified himself, he entered the temple with them, making public the completion
of the days of purification when the sacrifice would be made for each of
them. |
1 Corinthians 15:1-11
1 Now I would remind you, brothers
and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn
received, in which also you stand, 2 through which also you are being saved,
if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you — unless you
have come to believe in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance
what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance
with the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on
the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared
to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred
brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though
some have died. 7 Then he appeared to James,
then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared
also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an
apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of
God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the
contrary, I worked harder than any of them — though it was not I, but the
grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim
and so you have come to believe. |
Galatians 1:10-24
10 Am I now seeking
human approval, or God's approval? Or am I trying to please people? If
I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ.11 For
I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was
proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12 for I did not receive it from
a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation
of Jesus Christ. 13 You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism.
I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy
it. 14 I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age,
for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15 But when
God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace,
was pleased 16 to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among
the Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being,17 nor did I go up
to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away
at once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus.
18 Then after three years
I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days;19
but
I did not see any other apostle except James
the Lord's brother. 20 In what I am writing to you, before God,
I do not lie! 21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, 22
and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ;
23 they only heard it said, "The one who formerly was persecuting us is
now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy." 24 And they glorified
God because of me. |
Galatians 2:1-14
1 Then after fourteen years
I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me.
2 I went up in response to a revelation. Then I laid before them (though
only in a private meeting with the acknowledged leaders) the gospel that
I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running,
or had not run, in vain. 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled
to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4 But because of false believers
secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ
Jesus, so that they might enslave us — 5 we did not submit to them
even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might always remain
with you. 6 And from those who were supposed to be acknowledged leaders
(what they actually were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)
— those leaders contributed nothing to me. 7 On the contrary, when they
saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just
as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel for the circumcised 8 (for
he who worked through Peter making him an apostle to the circumcised also
worked through me in sending me to the Gentiles), 9 and when James
and Cephas and John, who were acknowledged pillars, recognized the grace
that had been given to me, they gave to Barnabas and me the right hand
of fellowship, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they
to the circumcised. 10 They asked only one thing, that we remember the
poor, which was actually what I was eager to do.
11 But when Cephas came
to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood self-condemned;
12 for until certain people came from James,
he used to eat with the Gentiles. But after they came, he drew back and
kept himself separate for fear of the circumcision faction. 13 And the
other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led
astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not acting
consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them
all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how
can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?" |
