2:8 In the same region there were {some} shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 2:9 And anR92 angel of the Lord suddenly stoodR93 before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior,R94 who is ChristF49 R95 theR96 Lord. 2:12 "This {will be} a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."F50 2:13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men withF51 R97 whom He is pleased."
2:15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds {began} saying to one another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us." 2:16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.F52 2:17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 2:18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 2:19 But Mary treasuredR98 all these things, pondering them in her heart. 2:20 The shepherds went back, glorifyingR99 and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
2:21 And when eightR100 days had passed, beforeF53 His circumcision, HisR101 name was {then} called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

2:1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2:2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'ius was governor of Syria. 2:3 And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 2:5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 2:6 And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. 2:7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
2:8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 2:9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 2:10 And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 2:11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"
2:15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." 2:16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 2:17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 2:18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. 2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
2:21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
2:1 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2:2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 2:3 All returned to their own towns to register for this census. 2:4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 2:5 He took with him Mary, his fiancè who was obviously pregnant by this time. 2:6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 2:7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn.
2:8 That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. 2:9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, 2:10 but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! 2:11 The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! 2:12 And this is how you will recognize him: You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!" 2:13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others – the armies of heaven – praising God: 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to all whom God favors.F6
2:15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Come on, let's go to Bethlehem! Let's see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." 2:16 They ran to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 2:17 Then the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 2:18 All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished, 2:19 but Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and thought about them often. 2:20 The shepherds went back to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God for what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child, just as the angel had said.
2:21 Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel even before he was conceived.

F6: Or and peace on earth for all those pleasing God; some manuscripts read and peace on earth, goodwill among people.
2:1 At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2:2 When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. 2:3 Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown. 2:4 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. 2:5 He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, 2:6 and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. 2:7 She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger — there was no room for them to stay in the inn.
2:8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. 2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid,R16 2:10 but the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 2:11 This very day in David's town your Savior was born — Christ the Lord! 2:12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."  2:13 Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!"
2:15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us." 2:16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. 2:17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. 2:18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. 2:19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. 2:20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.
2:21 A week later, when the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived.R17
