New American Standard Bible Revised Standard Version New Living Translation Today's English Version
1:19 {This}F21 youR40 know, myR41 beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slowR42 to speak {and} slowR43 to anger; 1:20 for theR44 anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. 1:21 Therefore, puttingR45 aside all filthiness and {all} thatF22 remains of wickedness, in humilityF23 receive theR46 word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
1:22 ButR47 prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his naturalF24 face inR48 a mirror; 1:24 for {once} he has looked at himself and gone away, heF25 has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 1:25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, theR49 {law} of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but anF26 effectual doer, this man will be blessedR50 in whatF27 he does.
1:26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridleF28 R51 his tongue but deceives his {own} heart, this man's religion is worthless. 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion inR52 the sight of {our} God and Father is this: to visitR53 orphansR54 and widows in their distress, {and} to keep oneself unstained byF29 theR55 world.

1:19 Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, 1:20 for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. 1:21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 1:23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; 1:24 for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing.
1:26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain. 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 1:20 Your anger can never make things right in God's sight. 1:21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the message God has planted in your hearts, for it is strong enough to save your souls.
1:22 And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. If you don't obey, you are only fooling yourself. 1:23 For if you just listen and don't obey, it is like looking at your face in a mirror but doing nothing to improve your appearance. 1:24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 1:25 But if you keep looking steadily into God's perfect law – the law that sets you free – and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
1:26 If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are just fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 1:27 Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.
1:19 Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry.R6 1:20 Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose. 1:21 So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.
1:22 Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice. 1:23 If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. 1:24 They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like.1:25 But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice — you will be blessed by God in what you do.
1:26 Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourself. 1:27 What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.
