NRSV:
     3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all.  3:17 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the mark in every letter of mine; it is the way I write.  3:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

1. Determine the genre of the passage.

  1. Discuss the nature and function of a conclusio in ancient letters.
2. Determine the literary context of the passage.
  1. List the contents (English translation) of the conclusia in the pauline corpus as listed in List of Epistolary Divisions in Paul's Letters at Cranfordville. Break down the component elements, as in 2 Thess example below. An internet based copy of several English translations can be found at the BST URL.
  2. Identify by name the component elements in each of the conclusio in the list above, as in 2 Thess example above.
3. Determine the time/place references in the passage.
  1. Compare 2 Thess. 3:17 with the other Sender Verifications (see completed list in question 2) in the pauline corpus and in 1 Pet. 5:12.
4. Analyze the internal literary structure of the passage.
  1. Identify and analyze the component elements in 2 Thess. 3:16-17.
5. Determine the interpretative issues -- both theologically and exegetically -- present in the passage.
  1. Discuss the use of dictation and a writing secretary in the composition of ancient letters.
6. Determine a central theme of the passage
 
7. Develop an exegetical outline of the passage.
 
8.  Develop a short, one page sermon brief from the passage.
