Matt. 7:1-23

    15:1       And
(A)       Pharisees and scribes were coming to Jesus
                                   from Jerusalem
                                   saying,
 (1)15:2                                 Why are your disciples transgressing the tradition of the elders?
                                               For
 (2)                                     they do not wash their hands
                                                  before they eat bread.
    15:3       And
                in reply
(B)       he said
                to them
 (3)                   Why do you also transgress the command of God
                               because of your tradition?

    15:4                     For
 (4)                   God said,
                                  Honor your father and your mother,
                                       and
                                   he who speaks against father or mother,
                                  let him be put to death;
    15:5                     but
 (5)                   you say,
                                 Whever may say to his father or mother,
                                                                         Gift,
                                                                            which you may benefit from me,

    15:6                                                                       will by no means honor his father;
                             and
 (6)                   you have nullified the word of God
                               because of your tradition.

    15:7                     Hypocrites,
 (7)                   how well did Isaiah prophecy about you,
                                    saying,
    15:8                                   This people honors me
                                                           with their lips,
                                                 but
                                            their heart is far from me;
    15:9                                        and
                                                       in vain
                                            do they worship me,
                                                       teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.
    15:10      And
                calling the crowd to him,
(C)       he said
                to them,
 (8)                    Listen
                              and
 (9)                    understand;

(10)                    What enters into the mouth does not defile the individual,
                              rather
    15:11                 what comes out of the mouth,
(11)                    this defiles the individual.

    15:12      Then
                           having come to him
(D)       his disciples were saying
                           to him,
(12)                               Do you know
                                                                      when they heard this word
                                                that the Pharisees were offended?

    15:13      And
                in reply
(E)       he said,
(13)              Every plant will be uprooted.
                            which my heavenly Father did not plant,

(14)15:14         Let them alone;

(15)1             they are blind guides of the blind
                        and
                                if the blind lead the blind
(16)              they both will fall into the pit.

    15:15      And
                   in answer
(F)       Peter said
                   to him,
(17)                       Explain to us this parable.

    15:16      And
(G)       he said,
(18)              Even still are you also foolish?

(19)15:17         Do you not perceive
                                       that everything entering into the mouth goes into the stomach
                                                 and
                                            it is cast out into the latrine?

    15:18               And
(20)              what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart
                        and
(21)              these things defile the individual.

    15:19               For
(22)              there comes out of the heart evil reasonings,
                                                acts of murder,
                                                        adultery,
                                                        fornication,
                                                        thievery,
                                                        false witnessing,
                                                        slander.

(23)15:20         These are what defile the individual,
                        and
(24)              to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the individual.

1This parable is also found in Luke 6:39 in an entirely different context concerning judgming others (6:37-42) as a part of Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount. The Lukan passage will not be treated.
